My house got break in by burglar!

Posted in Personal on February 6th, 2010 by Gerald Lum – 1 Comment

On 04/02/10, day time, my house got break in by burglar through the window along the corridor. It probably happened in the mid afternoon when my mum went for work. Apparentally she forgot to lock the window and grill after cleaning them. This is a lucky day for that burglar, effortless stealing.  Even with my small dog’s barking are not fearful enough to scare him off. Its a painful lesson for my family. I’m still feeling sad and frustated while writing this.

Chineses New Year is around the corner and it is the period of high crime rate even in Singapore. We Singapore are well known for the low crime rate but any careless mistakes you are inviting for trouble. I watch Crime Watch regularly but will never expect it to happen to my family. We are always aware of our surrounding but all you need is one careless mistake to regret it. Be very careful.

Total lost :

  1. 2 x old sony ericssion K700i ( black and champian gold )
  2. cash $1500
  3. one swatch watch
  4. one set of new clothing for CNY ( this idiot burglar really bastard )

I was frustated with my mother but I know she don’t feel as well as good. We did not let her know we lost $1500. This could be a blow to her. Most importantly and luckily is that this theft happened when no one is at home. Just be glad that no one is injured. I know I will fight back like the UFC!

Morale of story?

So if your mother, maid or anyone else is doing spring cleaning, make sure they locked up after cleaning!

What happened if your hosting crashed?

Posted in Internet Business on January 31st, 2010 by Gerald Lum – Be the first to comment

Have you ever encounter your host crashed and you lost everything in your website? If not, you better be prepared for the worst! I have been using my old host for about 2 years and I can confidently say that the service and support is excellent. However about 3 weeks ago, while I testing my new website ( refer to my Internet business  ),  I got these error message on my website

I encounter this error for all my websites today.
error code :
“Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_7c21be6a0ba68690ca90e886756b53e1, O_RDWR) failed: Read-only file system (30) in Unknown on line 0
Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct () in Unknown on line 0 “

From the host who give his best support

Hi Gerald,
Sorry for the delay. I had to wait for the data center to remount the drive so that I can check and restore the db. Turned out that it was corrupted there as well so that’s why the tables did not make it during the transfer. Sorry but those few tables cannot be restored – it’s in the bad section of the drive.

I thought its just another error from the hosting and can be solved by the host easily. Wrong. Fatal error! The data is lost at the corrupted server! The worst of all is that I did not backup my file. My heart sank. I was just about to upload the latest completed files to my website and it happened. You cannot sue/blame/refund your hosts. I have to pay my developer to repair and do some of the missing data. I really appreciate his help and supports.

Lessons learnt :

  1. Backup your files every month!
  2. Choose a reliable host!

After searching and reviews by user, I have decided to use Hostgator. For the price of $9.95 per month, you get hell lots of disk spaces and unlimited domain names. Most importantly is the reliablity and upload time.

Be safe, backup now!

Gerald Lum

Went shopping at IKEA!

Posted in Personal on January 21st, 2010 by Gerald Lum – 2 Comments

Last night I went shopping at IKEA  with my brother. Honestly, this is the lst time I went shopping at IKEA with the intention of the buy some samll funitures. I’m so thrilled when I found out the price of the funitures that I wanted. A small table ( for my laptop ) and it cost only SG$17.90! This could cost you more than SG$50 if you get it at the smaller neighbourhood shops!  TV bench for SG$119! ( cheapest set ) Book shelf at least SG$69! You can still choose the colors!

SG$17.90 small table

SG$17.90 IKEA small table

The price may be cheap but the designs are simple and modern. Of course don’t expect the toughest and durable quailty. The small table top that I’ve bought I actually made of chip wood, hence its light and not as tough. But it still fit my purposes. At this kind of cheap price, I wouldn’t mind if it damaged easily. Just get a new table if its damaged! :D

I’m starting to like IKEA!
