What happened if your hosting crashed?

Have you ever encounter your host crashed and you lost everything in your website? If not, you better be prepared for the worst! I have been using my old host for about 2 years and I can confidently say that the service and support is excellent. However about 3 weeks ago, while I testing my new website ( refer to my Internet business  ),  I got these error message on my website

I encounter this error for all my websites today.
error code :
“Warning: Unknown: open(/tmp/sess_7c21be6a0ba68690ca90e886756b53e1, O_RDWR) failed: Read-only file system (30) in Unknown on line 0
Warning: Unknown: Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct () in Unknown on line 0 “

From the host who give his best support

Hi Gerald,
Sorry for the delay. I had to wait for the data center to remount the drive so that I can check and restore the db. Turned out that it was corrupted there as well so that’s why the tables did not make it during the transfer. Sorry but those few tables cannot be restored – it’s in the bad section of the drive.

I thought its just another error from the hosting and can be solved by the host easily. Wrong. Fatal error! The data is lost at the corrupted server! The worst of all is that I did not backup my file. My heart sank. I was just about to upload the latest completed files to my website and it happened. You cannot sue/blame/refund your hosts. I have to pay my developer to repair and do some of the missing data. I really appreciate his help and supports.

Lessons learnt :

  1. Backup your files every month!
  2. Choose a reliable host!

After searching and reviews by user, I have decided to use Hostgator. For the price of $9.95 per month, you get hell lots of disk spaces and unlimited domain names. Most importantly is the reliablity and upload time.

Be safe, backup now!

Gerald Lum
